May Field Trip: It’s Spring, Let’s Draw Outside!

Join us at our May Field Trip!

May 25th, 1pm

Brooklyn Botanic Garden

150 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, NY

we’ll meet at the Eastern Parkway entrance to the garden

At this Meetup we will start with a short beginning drawing lesson after which participants will be free to explore the Garden and sketch the natural world at their leisure.

All you need is a pencil and paper, no special tools required. However if you have something you like to draw with, go ahead and bring it.

If it rains we’ll go next door to the Brooklyn Art Museum and explore/sketch there.

Admission to garden: $10

Home Office Storage Upgrade

By adding a file cabinet and some vertical storage, we were able to clear the desktop and make this a super user-friendly workspace.

Don’t worry, the play kitchen found a happy home in another room.

What I like: Glis boxes come in sets of 3. The price tag is $2.99 for three boxes!

The bright colors make them a favorite storage system for kid’s rooms, but they are appropriate for the office too. I use mine all over the house for items like binder clips, pens, hair ties, matches, lip balm…you name it. They stack well and the lids actually click shut securely.

Strategies for Unsavory Tasks: Gloves!

Washing dishes is fun…for some people. I don’t know who those people are, but they must exist. For the rest of us, I give you the one item that has made a huge difference in my attitude towards post dining clean-up. Gloves!

I discovered that it wasn’t so much that I hated washing dishes, I hated touching slimy food scraps and making my hands dry, scalding or cold from running water. Historically, I also disliked the smell of some dish detergents (a problem I’ve solved by using Ecover liquid) that would linger long after the last dish was done. Blech!

Now, not all gloves are created equal. Apparently, I have pretty sensitive hands. I cannot stand the white flocking that lines many household gloves. I also find some gloves make one’s hands sweat immediately, while others rip or tear after a few uses which render them ineffective.

The best gloves I have found (I’ve been using my current pair for over a year, and the last pair is now in my painting kit, not completely out of rotation) are these:

These are not disposable gloves. They will last a long time, and to make them last even longer than long, I wash them in light detergent (just like I’m washing my hands) and dry them completely (on a towel) before I hang them back up.
